Remembering CPC’s Response on 9-11

As we mark the 25th anniversary of the devastating events of September 11, 2001, I want to reflect on the role CPC played in the aftermath of a tragedy that changed our lives forever. Some members of our staff were here at the time, while others may not know this important part of CPC’s history. Our staff did whatever they could to support the community that day and throughout the days, weeks and years that followed. Among their many contributions, one stands out because it began while the country was still trying to understand what had happened—and what might come next.
Just two days after the towers fell, an employee assistance program affiliated with CPC contacted us for help. The company was responsible for providing support to Cantor Fitzgerald employees, but its own team could not reach New York City because the airports were closed. A group of staff members from across CPC programs volunteered to go. They traveled into the city that day and continued returning every day for the next two weeks. They met with survivors and with families grieving the loss of loved ones. They listened to some of the most painful stories imaginable, offering comfort, support and hope during an unimaginably dark time. Through it all, they also looked after one another. I will never forget the courage, compassion, and humility that team demonstrated.
Holocaust survivor and author Elie Wiesel once wrote, “Even in darkness, it is possible to create light and encourage compassion.” That is what I remember CPC staff doing in the aftermath of September 11. It is also what our staff continue to do every day: create light, extend compassion and help people find hope during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.
I hope each of you will take a moment to reflect on what this anniversary means to you and to our country. Thank you for allowing me to share what it means to me.
